Programming for Kids: Building a Mobile Game // TECH 131

Samantha John and Evan Farrar, Co-Founders, Hopscotch

Thursday, March 1st from 4:30 - 6:00 pm

Hey kids! Do you think mobile apps are cool? Want to build one yourself? Here's your chance.

In this hands-on class, we'll teach you how to program your own simple game. Your game will work in both a computer browser and on iPhones/Android phones and other mobile devices. You'll learn how to use HTML5 and the Coffeescript programming language to handle assets, dynamic events and animate page elements.

At the end of the class you'll have built your own game on your own dedicated webpage that you can share with anyone. You'll still have access to the programming environment and code so you can come back to it on your own to improve your game or make another after the class is over.

This class would be perfect for kids who love creating and building things and who want to get a taste of programming. Suitable for ages 10-14.

Samantha John is a co-founder of Hopscotch. She's a female programmer who came into programming late but is certain she would have loved it as a kid. She graduated from Columbia University in Applied Mathematics and is now a web developer working extensively with front-end and mobile web technologies.

Evan Farrar is a co-founder of Hopscotch. He's been programming since he was 11 and has worked at Groupon and Pivotal Labs. Evan believes strongly that programming is totally not some kind of magic, even if it looks like it.
